Which One Of Percocet And Oxycodone/Acetaminophen Is Good Post Mitral Valve Repair?

Question: I had mitral valve repair. In the hospital, they gave me Percocet. When released, the dr. prescribed oxycodone/ acedo. It seems like the Percocet worked better. Is there a difference?

Hi,

Can really understand your concern regarding the pain after your cardiac surgery.
Percocet which you were given in the hospital is a combination of oxycodone (narcotic opioid) and acetaminophen (centrally acting paracetomol) which works very nicely in pain control. Whereas oxycodone /acedo which you were given later seems to be a single drug. Can you respell the drug precisely. Was it oxycodone / acetaminophen?

Generally for better pain control and patient comfort in the initial first week of surgery, more than one drug is used. It can be gradually slided down at discharge. Further any cardiac surgery (with sternal incision) will be painful at the surgical site for at least 4-6 weeks. It slowly recedes, then the medications will be discontinued.

So do not worry. You will be pain free in a period of 4-6 weeks after surgery. During this while if you really feel the pain is unbearable, you can as well add acetaminophen 500 mgs twice daily which is quite safe. Perhaps you can keep your cardiac surgeon also informed regarding this pain.
