What Should Be Done For Sore Nipples Due To The Baby Biting?

default
Posted on Sat, 17 Jan 2015
Question: Hi, my wife delivered her first baby 6 days ago and has begun breast feeding since 4-5 days now. The baby has been biting and her nipples have become very sore and even developed some cuts with a drop or two of blood oozing. Can you please advise how to tackle this?

In addition, her snoring has increased a lot since delivery and is almost loud enough to wake the baby. Any advise here?

Thanks much for the help.

Thanks

Brief Answer:
Nipcare cream will help.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for trusting us with your health concern.
It is usual to have cracked nipples during breast feeding. The following measures will help with the cracked nipples:
a. Only wear cotton innerwear
b. She can apply Nipcare cream immediately over the area after cleansing it properly with warm water and savlon.
Apply a lubricant like baby oil or any moisturizer over the nipples.
Breast feed the baby alternately from each breast so that the cracked area gets rest for 3-4 hours after feeding.
The loud snoring can be due to blocked nose or partial obstruction of the airway. Do consult a physician for a proper examination to find the cause.
Please feel free to discuss further. I will be glad to answer the follow up queries that you have.
Wishing you good health.

Thanks for the quick response doctor. Silly question, but is nipcare baby safe? He is 6 days old and in case if he consumes traces, is that 100% ok? Also i assume nipcare is the name of the ointment itself, can you pls confirm.

As for the snoring, she does not have cold and has developed the loud snoring only after delivery. So was wondering if there is anything i can try. Since she went through a c sec, she is very weak and unable to travel much - so it may take a while for me to examine this with a physician.

Thank you.

Brief Answer:
Nipcare is safe.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
Nipcare is safe but it is better to clean the nipple with warn water before feeding. It is 100% safe. It is the name of the ointment.
Giving anything over the counter during breast feeding is not advisable. She can do a steam inhalation and see if it helps.
Hope my answer is helpful.
