Question: I have mild bronchiectasis. I am having a mild shortness of breath and some chest discomfit. I purchased a product called Bronkaid which is ephedrine sulfate and guaifenesin. It says to only take if one has asthma. Would be ok for me to take with BX?

Brief Answer:
You can take this in bronchiectesis also.

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

Guafenesin is expectorant drug. It will ease coughing out secretions.
Ephedrine is bronchodilator. It relieves bronchospasm.
Now in bronchiectesis, there are both, bronchospasm and mucus production.
So ephedrine and guafenesin will definitely help you in relieving bronchospasm and secretions.
So you can definitely take this in bronchiectesis.
Along with this, you should also take N acetyl cystine (NAC).
It is very good mucolytic, expectorant and anti inflammatory drug.
Hope I have solved your query. I will be happy to help you further. Wish you good health. Thanks.

Can you recommend anything for shortness of breath? I do the physiotherapy twice a day and take some herbs. I have been taking NAC for months. All of those have helped until today. Is there anything else I should be doing? I do have an inhaler, but want to avoid it if possible. thank you.

Brief Answer:
Yes, you should definitely start inhaler.

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

Bronchiectesis is classified in obstructive Airway disease (OAD) category.
So bronchospasm and related breathlessness is common feature in bronchiectesis.
And hence inhaled bronchodilators (formoterol or salmeterol) and inhaled corticosteroid (ICS) (budesonide or fluticasone) should be started in patient of bronchiectesis with breathing difficulty.
So in my opinion, you should definitely start inhaler.
Please let me know which inhaler you are having so that I can guide you better.
I will be happy to help you further. Wish you good health. Thanks.
