Posted on Fri, 27 Mar 2015
Question: Hello doctor, I have been having anxiety issues for a few months. I was on paxil for 12 years and I slowly weaned myself off. I do not wish to back on a drug, so I have been trying natural supplements and holistic remedies. I am taking magnesium and it does seem to help but I do not know how much to take. Is magnesium cloride best? I have been recently diagnosed with chronic gasteritis ,IBS and asthma. I eat healthy organic food, exercise regularly and my bloodwork is good. I really need help with my anxiety. I can't sleep, lack of concentration and focus. I hope you can help! Thank you

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for writing to us.

I read your query with minute details.

After being on paxil for 12 years and recurrent anxiety symptoms mostly favor of some psychological anxiety disorder. As you have slowly weaned off paxil it is less likely drug withdrawal symptoms.

You are taking enough supplements, healthy diet and trying holistic approach and relaxation. All of these factors are enough to curtail anxiety if it is due to any of deficiency of physical problem.

Yes magnesium deficiency can cause anxiety as well as leg cramps. Anxiety also can cause leg cramps. To check the reason best thing is to go for serum magnesium level. If it low, correct the same with supplement containing magnesium. Dose and duration should be adjusted according to level of magnesium.Transdermal magnesium therapy is also available.Normal daily requirement of magnesium is 300-400 mg.

Almost all magnesium slats like chloride are helpful. In my opinion Magnesium threonate, Magnesium glycinate and Magnesium oxide are good salts from absorption point of view and less irritable considering your problem of IBS.

If magnesium level comes normal, consult psychiatrist for detail mental status examination and evaluation. f any anxiety disorder can be diagnosed, cognitive behavior therapy will help to treat the same without need of medicines.

Hope this answer is helpful, I will be happy to help further.

Regards,
Dr.Chintan Solanki.
