What, If Any, Pain Medications Are Or Will Be Allowable

Question: What, if any, pain medications are or will be allowable near term for chronic pain sufferers? At my worst, I lost 50 pounds in 3 months time because the pain was so bad I wanted to get better of let God take me to another world. Please help if you can! You know what is happening with the DEA and what they are threatening doctors with. I mean good doctors, not just pill prescribers. What can I do short of leaving this world all together?

Brief Answer:
You must be allowed use of your routine pain killers

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to Ask A Doctor service.

I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

As a pharmacologist I must say that physicians should know how to discriminate between drug abuse and drug dependence.

In your case its not drug abuse and you must be allowed the use of opioids on as needed basis. Tramadol etc are good pain killers and in back surgeries, these are the most helpful medicines.

Other than these, there are NSAIDs. Buprenorphine, Lofexidine are also helpful medicines. Duloxetine, amytriptaline are antidepressants that may also be effective.
Gabapentin, ketamine are also considered in some cases.

Hope this helps. Let me know if I can assist you further.
