What Does This Stool Test Report Indicate?

default
Posted on Tue, 25 Aug 2015
Question: Hello Doctor,

PFA the stool culture report along with the stool test report.

it has been 10 days my baby is passing semi solid stool for 3-4 times a day.

she is taking probiotics for last 6 days and doctor today suggested antibiotics Diof DS . Now in the cover of the medicine its written that it has some adverse affect when tested on mice. So i was bit worried about giving this medicine to my baby.

What's your opinion on this? Can we give this antibiotics? is there any adverse affect?

I told my local doctor as per stool culture there is no bacteria infection, but he was keen for the antibiotics as the condition is now for more than 10 days.

I also asked if we can give any specific medicine for digestion , as i feel my baby is suffering from indigestion problem (after going through the stool test report) my doctor is saying that kind of medicine will increase her bowls.

Please advice.

Brief Answer:
I don't think that antibiotic is needed

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Thanks for follow up

I have gone through the report and there is no organism in the stool.
The stool frequency has decreased and consistency is also improved (initially it was watery and 6-8 times a day).
If baby is active, playful and accepting orally well I don't think that antibiotic is needed.
Sometimes it may take longer duration for the stool to get its normal pattern.
In previous prescription also she was advised to take antibiotic. But the condition has improved without using cefixime (zifrax).
Antibiotic is needed in dysentary (bacterial or amebic infection ) not in diarrhea.
Diof DS contains ofloxacin and metronidazole.
Sometimes antibiotic like metronidazole can cause vomiting due to its metallic taste.
Ofloxacin is a fluriquinolone group of antibiotic and it has been seen that in animal models it can cause cartilage related problem. That is the reason it is not recommended in children of early age.
But there is still doubt about its affect on human beings and because of its good coverage it is used frequently in XXXXXXX
I have not seen even a single case of cartilage problem as a side effect of ofloxacin.
Even there are various research articles which shows that the side effects are more in older age (more than 60 years of age).
If you think that she needs antibiotic you can go with Diof DS without going into the controversies.

Continue giving zinc and probiotic.

Please let me know if you have any more query.
Wishing for your baby's speedy recovery.

Thank you for your reply.

Since this all problem started once I started giving her Fruit juices (diluted). Can I not give her Mosambi juice in near future? Is there any other source for Vit C in toddlers which are easily digestible?

Brief Answer:
Vegetables and fruits are rich source of vitamin C

Detailed Answer:
You can give her mausambi juice once her loose stool improves. If there is recurrence of loose stool then only I would suggest you to avoid giving mausambi juice.
There are various citrus and non citrus fruits that are rich source of vitamin C.
Citrus fruits like lemon, orange and mausambi and non citrus fruits like watermelon, papaya, kiwi all are rich source of vitamin C.
Vitamin C defeciency is not so common as the daily requirement can be achieved well with daily food.Giving fruits also prevent vitamin C deficiency.
