What Does This MRI Report Of Left Knee Indicate?

Posted on Mon, 29 Dec 2014
Question: Hi below I describe my MRI report of 10/22/14
Left Knee: Have undisplaced horizontal cleavage tear of the posterior horn and body of the medial meniscus with underlying myxoid degeneration. Small popliteal cyst. Medial compartment degenerative change. No detached of displaced fragments are seen
Right Knee: Have undisplaced horizontal cleavage tear of the posterior horn and body of the medial meniscus with underlying myxoid degeneration. Small popliteal cyst. . No detached of displaced fragments are seen. Some medial Femrorotibal and Patellofemoral degenerative change as detailed
I am 60 YO fit, healthy, I had no tramatic injury to the knees, just what I would describe as aging, wear and tear.
Since july of this year, I have had knee pain and stiffness in my left knee, and wear tensor bandages on both knees during any activities. I have always worn tensor bandages if my knees experienced pain and or fatigue.
I have been prescribed physiotherapy exercises over the last month which consist of heel slides, Isometric quadriceps-knee protected, Knee extensions, wall squat while squeezing a ball at my knees, I have practiced yoga for 18n years and continue now and just modify my reoutine.
My quads and supporting muscles around my knees have certainly strengthened, with the physio. . I walk with care, and use an elliptical and stationary bike at home.
One can only do so much strengthening of the supports around the knee.
It does not take much of a twist, bump, slip, to set them off, and potentially tear them further.
My question: in everything I have read, I appears that tears of the meniscus have a very poor healing ability, if at all???
Are these types of tears ones that can be stitched? And if so, will they heal, I assume they are in the white zone.
Right now my knees are pain free, but are very fragile, as above, I am just one small twist, bump, slip, from a re-injury.
Is this the best I can expect, or do tears like this ever stabilize, so I can once again walk all day, bike 100 kilometers, ect. I never push it, I always guard my knees, but what kind of recovery can I expect from this., and what recommendations would you have.hi, since i uploaded the actual MRI report, could you please comment on my back issues also, I get occasion pain in the low back, which i manage with massage, rolfing, yoga, and specific targeted exercise, thank you,
Thank you very much

Brief Answer:
Diacerine, glucosamine, analgesic, exercises

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for your query

I'm Dr Sudhir Kumar

After going through your query and MRI reports in detail I concluded that you are having bilateral osteoarthritis of knee with degenerative changes in spine. It is related to age and common in your age.
The changes in meniscus are also degenerative. These tears are unlikely to heal. Stitching them is not indicated as these are unlikely to heal even after repair.

Treatment of it: Diacerine and glucosamine. These drugs help in regeneration of cartilage and prevent degeneration to some extent. Analgesic such as ibuprofen is helpful in pain relief. Physiotherapy and quadriceps exercises are helpful in pain relief.

Lumbar spine also has degenerative changes. This treatment also helps in back pain. Back exercises and Physiotherapy will help.

You can discuss with your doctor about it. Hope your query gets answered. If you have any clarification then I will be happy to help you.
Wishing you a good health.
Take care.
