What Does Persistent Vertigo And Nausea Indicate In A Patient With Spina-Bifida?

default
Posted on Thu, 5 Oct 2017
Question: No medication as of yet. When I woke up, I tried to sit up and the room started to spin. No alcohol has been consumed for weeks. I was very dizzy and nauseated. Every time I tried to sit up, I would get real dizzy and nauseated. With husbands help, was able to move from bed to couch. FYI--I am handicapped with Spina-Bifida.

Brief Answer:
different possible causes

Detailed Answer:
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

Experiencing either the room or the sensation of yourself spinning is called vertigo.

There are different causes but the most common causes are related to the inner ear: (1) BPPV- benign paroxysmal positional vertigo
(2)meniere's
(3)vestibular neuronitis

BPPV- episodes occur with certain head positions or movements. Lasts seconds to minutes.
Medication can be used for a few days eg anti vert, diazepam, phenergan, ativan, reglan.
There is a maneuver called Epley maneuver (or can use semont maneuver) that is used to treat this. It can be demonstrated by your doctor but there are also guidelines online

Meniere's-associated with tinnitus (hearing ringing or buzzing or other abnormal sounds) and hearing loss
Episodes last minutes
Low salt diet and diuretics help if it is severe

Vestibular neuronitis- last for hours at a time, may be a recent illness
Medications are used for a few days.

These are the more common causes, your doctor would determine the cause for you but based on what was said, BBPV is likely but only physical examination can confirm this
Medication and the epley or semont maneuver would help

I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions
