What Does My Mammography Report Inidicate?

Question: Hello Dr. Lundi, I received mammography report: "breasts exhibit predominately fatty pattern with small amounts residual fibroglandular elements. there is no intrinsic breast masses, however there is a somewhat prominent intramammary node in left axillary tail zone. there are no tumor-type calcifications. there are mutiple ovoid enlarged left axillary nodes the largest is approx. 3x2cm with absence of sinus fat. since there is no intrinsic breast mass the aforementioned findings may be on a sytemic basis such as a lymphoproliferative disorder, but left axillary sonogram with potential biopsy is considered." Please can you tell me what this all means & if it is possible cancer marker. I am making appt for sonogram tomorrow. Thank you, XXXXXXX

Brief Answer: those nodes need needle biopsy Detailed Answer: Hi XXXXXXX Thanks for writing to HCM. As per your mammogram, your breast paranchyma appears normal with no mass or calcification. But your axillary nodes are significantly enlarged. Though these can even be enlarged due to your bronchitis, but lymph node enlargement following an infection are usually painful. Malignant nodes are usually painless. Also early stages of breast cancer can be missed on mammogram. So a needle biopsy is advisible, preferably under ultrasound guidance, from a few of the larger nodes. You can request for them when you go for your sonogram, if facility of biopsy is available there. Else your pathologist will do the same. Further management will depend upon the result of the biopsy.
