What Does My MRI Scan Report Indicate?

Posted on Tue, 12 Jul 2016
Question: Hello again, Dr. Rijhwani. As a followup on the problem of my wife's knee lateral mensicus flap problem, what is your opinion as to how many times she can repeat a cortisone shot to alleviate the pain resulting from the knee locking without having repair surgery? The orthopedic surgeon recommends doing surgery "eventually" but leaves it up to her. My wife doesn't know how long to go without resorting to arthroscopic surgery if possible. Yet she feels she should still do it "as soon as possible." I look forward to your opinion. Thank you.

Dear Sir,

Thank you for reverting back.

Well I will need to see the MRI report of your wife to see the grade and extent of tear in the knee because after seeing that we can predict to some extent the prognosis although it varies from individual to individual . Generally we don't recommend more than three injection in an year when given intraarticular . Please send me the report and I will guide you further .

Thank you. All we have on hand is the radiologist report of the MRI as last time. I am uploading it for you again. Can we infer from what you are suggesting that a second shot before the autumn would be possible to delay repairing the flap until October or November.

Detailed Answer:
Dear Sir,

I have gone through the reports and don't find the tear reported that significant , you can always wait with this . In my opinion you can try one more injection Atleast before thinking about surgery . Also if your wife is overweight please ask her to lose weight as maintain healthy weight is very important for healing . Ask her to increase intake of vitamin c as that promotes healing and calcium and vitamin D for stronger bones .
