Posted on Thu, 26 Jun 2014
Question: Hello,
About 6 months ago I developed an itchy bump on my bum shortly after it turned into a sore, this would get stuck to my clothing as it was seeping a bit a puss slowly, after a week or so it went away but I have just developed another on in the exact same place and the same thing has happened, I have been cleaning it and covering with a plaster to stop it sticking to clothing but I am worried as to what this could be?
Any ideas would be greatly helpful I'm too embarrassed to go to my gp !
Thanks

Brief Answer:
It could be a cyst or abscess

Detailed Answer:
Pus suggests that infection is present. Abscesses can drain and go away on their own, but they can come back. Cysts are like sacs in the skin that can fill up with fluid. If bacteria get into them, they can create abscesses. Even if the infection goes away, the cyst sac is still there and fluids can return. To stop the problem, the whole cyst has to be removed. I understand you are embarrassed to go to your GP, but he or she can treat it correctly so it won't keep coming back. Skin infections can spread and you might then need antibiotics, so it's best to get it looked at now.

Brief Answer:
Looks like an abscess

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXXXXX
Thank you for sending the pictures and following up. Based on the photos, I think this is an abscess. I understand your concerns about herpes. This does not look like a herpes infection in the photo. I strongly encourage you to see your GP. The abscess needs to be opened and pus removed. Infection can spread if it does not drain. The procedure can be done in your GP's clinic and is simple. Please do not wait any longer to get this fixed. I wish you a speedy recovery and good health. --Dr Karen Steinberg

Brief Answer:
You don't need to go if it's gone

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX if the abscess is totally gone, there is nothing to be done at this point. The photos you sent indicated that something needed to be done promptly at the time. As I mentioned, they can go away on their own sometimes. But if it keeps coming back in the same place, it's best to go when your GP can see it and treat it. If you still have redness in the area and your skin there is warm or tender, I still would suggest you go now. The skin itself can get infected without creating an abscess and you would need antibiotics then. If everything's completely normal now, you don't need to do anything right now. Best wishes and hope this doesn't happen again!
