What Do These Following Biopsy Reports Indicate?

Posted on Mon, 3 Apr 2017
Question: Hello Doctor,

I have done 2 biopsy for the base of tongue. The first biopsy was in February 2016 and the second one in March 2017 (Both reports are attached for your review). Does the reports indicate any sign of per-cancer lesions?

I would appreciate if you could explain what the findings and diagnosis mean in the second report.

Thank you very much.

Brief Answer:
Hello dear. It looks like a viral infection

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear.

I have gone through the details and the reports.

The changes hyperplasia means increased no of cells in layers of tongue which is most likely due to a sequele of viral infection. Similarly, lymphoid hyperplasia refers to increased no of lymphoid cells due to same reason.

The condition is not pre-cancerous but I'd strongly advice to have a second opinion about biopsy report from another pathologist.

Thanks and regards

Dear Dr. XXXXXXX XXXX,

Thank you for your prompt response.

Do you recommend to have the lesion sample examined by another pathologist? or just to discuss the report?

is there any chance that the lesion sample has not been well examined "Misdiagnosed"

I am a bit concern about this statement in the report "Lymphocytes infiltrate the surface epithelium" ... what does it mean? what conditions is Lymphocytes infiltration associated with?

Best regards,

Dear Dr. XXXXXXX XXXX,

Do you recommend other kinds of test along with reexamining the sample like MRI or CT?

I have enlarged neck lymph nodes persistent for 1.5 years in Level 1B and 2 as indicated in U/S reports (reached 2.8 cm x 0.95 cm) and look benign based on the reports findings.

Thank you for your responses.

Regards,
doctor

Brief Answer:
Hello. Sample needs to be examined

Detailed Answer:
Hello. The sample needs to be examined again. The changes are all viral but again hyperplasia is difficult to define. Viral infection can lead to cancer sometime and hence biopsy needs to be reexamined.
Thanks and regards

Brief Answer:
Hello. Mri can be done if biopsy is positive

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear. Mri of face and neck can be done if biopsy is positive. First, get biopsy reviewed.
Thanks and regards
