What Do My Liver Test Results Indicate?
Question: Hello Doctor,
I have been a little worried about my ALT and AST Numbers. My AST is at 78 and my ALT is at 89. I was tested a few months ago and they were: AST: 59 and ALT: 81. The doctor had me go get an ultra sound and the results showed my liver was very slightly enlarged and considered a bit of a Fatty Liver. My diet is pretty normal. Egg Whites in the morning, usually sandwich or protein shake for lunch, and for dinner i usually have fish or chicken or pasta; pretty standard. I drink a little on the weekends, usually 2-3 drinks tops. I smoke marijuana at night every so often. I exercise 3-4 times a week.
Is this something I should be worried about? I heard Niacin helps with this? my current medications are: atenolol 25 MG daily and lipitor 10 mg every other day. I take daily mens vitamins, B12, Fish Oil, B1, C and Biotin Daily.

Hello,
I just started my lipitor after the first exam due to high levels of "bad" cholesterol. The doctor actually wanted me to wait until after the ultra sound to see if the "status" of the liver. after the ultra sound cleared and found out it was fatty liver he prescribed me the lipitor which has brought down the bad cholesterol levels and are now normal. But now that i am on the lipitor it looks like the elevations climbed up a bit.
I drink mildly once a week maybe once every 2 weeks.
So start taking Vitamin E? and silymarin? not sure what silymarin is... any thing else?

Now, at this point, I highly recommend to:
- stop drinking alcohol
- take vitamin E at a dosage of f 800 IU. It is a good anti-oxidant and help non-diabetic people with fatty liver to improve liver function test.
- Silymarin which is the extract of the milk thistle seeds which has been shown effective in liver diseases including fatty liver.
As mentioned earlier, you should be talking with your doctor to stop using Lipitor or any other statin drug and to start any other cholesterol lowering medication.
