What Could Cause Redness And Inflammation On The Right Foot In A Diabetic?

default
Posted on Fri, 25 Aug 2023
Question: Male. 72. Type II diabetes 6 years. Metformin 500 mg. 2x day. Average level is 117 -- 135. For about 10 days, I have a small (somewhat reddened) inflamed area on TOP right half of my right foot just toward the leg. It has NOT GOTTEN WORSE in this time. Just bothersome. The skin is NOT broken NOR tender. It's tender on what feels like a bone, tendon or ligament. Doesn't hurt when I'm still. Two questions. With my sugar level in that 117 -- 135 range, and because of the location, is it unlikely an ulcer forming, or could it be I stretched, pulled, twisted, cracked, whatever a bone or ligament and got it inflamed? The reddening is NOT predominant. Just noticeable. And the skin itself is not tender. Should I panic or is likely from an injury I didn't know about.

I'VE NEVER HAD ANY PROBLEM WITH THE DIABETES THESE YEARS. KEPT ON MY MEDICINE AND, AGAIN, THE SUGAR LEVEL IS 117--- 135. LAST BLOOD TEST WAS NORMAL.

Brief Answer:
It may be sprain or strain. less chances of ulcer formation.

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

In case of diabetes, chances of non healing ulcers are more with uncontrolled sugar level. In your case, skin is not broken and sugar level is also well controlled, so chances of ulcer formation are very less. What is your last HbA1c level? Do you have any history injury or blunt trauma?

Common causes of inflamed foot ate blunt trauma, sprain or strain, calcaneus spur or may plantar fasciitis. I will suggest you to do x ray and MRI right foot for proper diagnosis and consult with orthopedician with reports.

You can take Metaxalone 400 mg plus Diclofenac 50 mg for pain. As these are prescription medications so consult with your doctor. Apply Diclofenac gel or spray locally. Apply ice locally. do regular physiotherapy after physiotherapist consultation. Kindly follow up with detailed history.

I think this will clarify your concern. Thank you.
