What Causes Weight Loss While On Antipsychotics?

default
Posted on Thu, 16 Feb 2017
Question: Dear Dr. Sheppe,
Some weeks ago, during the attempt of my psychiatrist to replace Keppra by Lamictal, it fails, but i lost more or least 9 pounds. Now i am 187 pounds (1.79 cm), and as far as i understand, i still have overweight. Before that attempt i was more or least 196 pounds. I would like to know why this problem with weight happened and if it's something serious or not for the absorbtion of the meds i am taking (including Klonopin). What is the average of weight gain with Sertindole? I am back to Keppra since 4 weeks, i was 7 days on Serlect (Sertindole) 12 mg (i stayed with Serlect 8 mg for more or least two weeks) and since yesterday i am back to Serlect 16 mg.
Thanks, XXXXXXX

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXXXXX and thanks for your question.

This is not a serious problem -- if anything, a little bit of weight loss sounds healthy for you. I doubt the weight loss is in any way related to the medication you are taking.

Weight gain with antipsychotics is very different from person to person. Some people lose weight, and some gain a lot of weight. Overall, the average weight gain with sertindole is around 10 pounds, but this is an average, and it can affect people very differently.

Dear Dr. Sheppe,
Thanks a lot, and a last question, please. So there is no problem if i have less weight with fats needed for plasma levels of Klonopin?
Thanks beforehand, XXXXXXX

Detailed Answer:
No, less weight will in no way meaningfully affect plasma levels of Klonopin.
