Question: Our 4 year old son vomits on a regular basis - always at night when in bed asleep. His vomit is mainly clear mucus. We have tried watching diet, taking him to doctors, making sure he winds down at night, but we are at a loss as he doesn't have a cold or cough during the day?

Brief Answer:
Gastritis

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for writing to health care magic.
Vomiting clear mucus indicates that there is no intestinal obstruction. In short major problems are ruled out.
Few of the possibilities include
Gastritis:
Try proton pump inhibitors like lanzoprazole once a day before food. I usually prescribe for atleast 10 to 14 days for gastritis to settle completely.
Cyclical vomiting:
Vomiting occurring every few days in cycles. This is diagnosed after ruling out other problems by ultrasound.
Overeating at night:
This is seen commonly as kids do not regulate their intake.
Try limited diet at dinner.
Wishing him speedy recovery.
Regards
Dr Arun
