What Causes Thick Black Mucus In The Nostrils?

default
Posted on Wed, 16 Aug 2023
Question: Hello Doctor,

I am writing because I've recently been having black, hardened mucus in my nostrils (black boogers, in other words). It's slightly dry where I live, but can a little blood in the nose turn black? Or could it be something more sinister? I don't have any pain associated. I can send a picture if necessary. Thank you.

Brief Answer:
It seems to be a dried blood clot

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

Looking at the information given by you and the image shown (especially the second image), it seems to be a dried blood clot.

Dry atmosphere leads to dryness and crusting in the nose. And when we try to clean the nose by removing the crust or forceful sneezing, it leads to bleeding from the nose. A dry blood clot may give such an appearance which is shown in the second image.

Don't try to forcefully clean your nose.

Use Saline Nasal spray in the nose, which will prevent dryness in the nose by providing moisture.

Avoid inhalation of dust, cigarette smoking.

If you suffer from fever, headache, nasal blockage, etc, then it would be advisable to consult an ENT specialist doctor for the Endoscopic examination of your nose.

Hope this answers your question.
