After going through your query I came to know that you want to know meaning of swollen ankles. Swollen ankle means size and circumference of ankle has been enlarged as compared to normal ankle. Causes can be many but I am listing common causes.

1.Injury, such as fall from height and road accidents.
2. infective arthritis such as bacterial, tubercular, fungal and viral
3.Inflammatory arthritis such as rheumatoid arthritis.
4.Degenerative arthritis due to aging.
5. Heart and kidney diseases leading to edema.
6.Thyroid disease(Hypothyroidism) leading to non pitting edema.
7.Less proteins in blood(hypoproteinemia)
