What Causes Swelling On Upper Portion Of Penis?

default
Posted on Thu, 27 Aug 2015
Question: I am 21 years old and my penis has had unusual swelling on the top side of it over the past few days. It seems to go down at night and looks nearly normal when I wake up in the morning but is back swollen as the day goes on. There's no real pain or discoloring, simply swollen some 50% of it's normal size on the top side. Have no clue what could have caused this and I've only been with my girlfriend that I've been with for 3 years. I recently started a weight lifting program a few weeks ago, but otherwise, nothing really has changed to my normal lifestyle.

Brief Answer:
Need more information.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome to health care magic,

I have read your query and understand the concern.

Here,I will need to inspect the lesion whether it is traumatic swelling or infective or inflammatory.

So,it would be better if you can take a clinical picture and send it as there is a feature to upload images on right side query page.

I would see the pictures and advise you accordingly.

Awaiting your response.

There is no lesion and the swelling is definitely inflammatory. Bottom line, I am experiencing this phenomena for no apparent reason and it isn't causing any pain. Furthermore, the swelling does not affect the entire length or circumference of my scrotum, but is primarily on the upper portion and covers approximately 50% of the length. I won't be sending pictures, so I would appreciate seeing your hypothesis on what could be causing this?

Thank you

Brief Answer:
Swelling could be due to balanitis.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for the follow-up.

It might be due to balanitis or balanoposthitis or genital herpes (H.simplex) uncommonly or chancroid etc.

But it must be examined by visual inspection of an expert for which you can consult general surgeon or dermatologist for proper diagnosis first.

The main cause of balanitis is poor hygiene. Poor hygiene causes harmful bacteria to overpopulate the area, which can lead to infection. Also the foreskin of the penis is an ideal place for bacteria to grow.

Injuries (during sexual intercourse) on the tip of the penis or foreskin can also cause irritation or pain or swelling.

Generally, treatment depends on the particular diagnosis which should be made first.

Meanwhile,The following treatment would be helpful.

1) Hot Sitz bath-

Sit for 15-- 20 minutes and also clean off any clear or whitish secretion from the glans.

Daily maintain hygiene of your genitals and also your partner.

2. Local Steroid cream/ointment application-

Clean off and wipe off the area clean and dry, following which apply local steroid ointment like betamethasone.

The infection or irritation should start subsiding after 3 to 4 of Ointment application.

3. You can be given oral antibiotics like cephalosporins (cefadroxyl or cefixime to prevent superinfection) for which you can consult some local doctor or surgeon who may prescribe it after complete clinical examination

Hope this information will be helpful to you.
