What Causes Spasms In Abdominal Area?

default
Posted on Thu, 26 Feb 2015
Question: I am a 47 year old female and the past week I have been having "spasms" in my abdominal area on the left side just under my ribs. It is so intense sometimes, it literally makes me jump. It's just like a "bump." It almost feels like something inside is kicking me. I have no other symptoms. No way I could be pregnant, I have been through menopause already and haven't had a period in 2 years. I am a slender, fit female. No weight gain or anything. But it literally feels like something inside is punching me.

Brief Answer:
SOme diagnostics is necessary to determine the cause.

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Thank you for the query.

Do you have any hiccups? Belching? Nausea? Any frequent urinating, burning while urinating?

Such symptom can be caused by stomach issue (peptic ulcer, stomach inflammation), diaphragm irritation due to some compression on it, kidney stones or rib muscles spasm due to ions deficiency.

Stomach issues usually give also nausea, lack of appetite. The pain usually appears after a meal intake.

Any lump which irritates diaphragm (kidney tumor, enlarged spleen) can cause such strange spasms. Hiccups are also characteristic for diaphragm irritation.

Kidney stones can give sudden spasms along with frequent urinating, burning while urinating. The pain can radiate downward to the groin.

Ions deficiency should give also calf spasms especially during the night.

I suggest you to have some tests done. Abdominal ultrasound, blood work, urine analysis should be done at first. Gastroscopy should be considered.
If ions deficiency seems possible, you should start Magnesium and Potassium supplementation.

Hope this will help. Feel free to ask further questions.
Regards.
