What Causes Sore Tongue, Sneezing And Runny Nose After Eating Walnuts?

Posted on Mon, 21 Sep 2015
Question: My son ate a muffin containing walnuts, and soon after c/o sore tongue (it looked scalloped around edges) and was sneezing with runny nose. Symptoms resolved with Benadryl. Should I assume he has a walnut allergy? Do I need to take him to an allergist? He also has seasonal allergies, and had also eaten a burger cooked on an outdoor grill.

Brief Answer:
Most probably allergic reaction

Detailed Answer:
Hello

Thank You for contacting HCM. My name is Dr Muhammad Ali Rauf & i will look into your problem.

I have gone through your query and would try to help you in the best possible way. There is high probability that the symptoms were due to allergic reaction in response to food allergy(most probably walnut). Benadryl is an antihistamine which neutralizes the reaction. I would suggest you to try to avoid such food. If you observe that allergic response becomes more frequent then take him to an allergist for immunotherapy.

Hope I have answered your query. If you have any further questions I will be happy to help if not then don't forget to close the discussion and rate it.
Wishing you good health !!
