Question: I urgently needed to have a bm but held it for an hour because I was driving and there really was no place to go. An hour after finally going I began to have shaking chills, feverish, body aches, neck pain, feeling terrible. I still have the sensation of having to go but can't. Has lasted 3 hours so far. Just took Tylenol waiting to see if it will break. Is this common or should I be concerned?

Brief Answer:
Better to consult a Surgeon

Detailed Answer:
Hi.

This is bit uncommon thing to happen and rare to have have such severe symptoms after having to hold BM.

Your symptoms of shaking chills, feverish, body ache, neck pain etc is indicative that your should better be seen by a Surgeon or Gastroenterologist preferably to have a physical examination of the abdomen, the anal area to if there is ant swelling, tenderness and rebound tenderness in the abdomen. It is very rare to have such severe symptoms.

He may advise some blood tests and ultrasonography to see secondary effects like collection of fluid or so.

With all the symptoms I would like to give my patient a course of antibiotics and metronidazole on a safer side. Keep a close watch for betterment or worsening of the problem. 3 hours of suffering is a bit long time to suffer.

I hope this answer helps you to get along further.
