What Causes Severe Throat Pain While Suffering From Acidity?

default
Posted on Thu, 18 May 2017
Question: Hi Doctor, based on the previous advice i received, i wanted an opinion on need for surgery.

I completed course of antibiotics and continuing to take Coekastle and fluticasone spray. Coekastle makes me drowsy and reduces my deep sleep but it does reduce my post nasal drip to a major extent, but need to take it regularly. My only confusion is that my doctor told me that my throat pain is caused by post nasal drip but even after i felt my post nasal drip cleared pretty well, i still had the throat pain. Moreover, if it does not work, i have been advised surgery as next step (to remove infected areas in sinuses causing drip-not sure about the name) .

I feel that acidity also plays a factor here. The throat pain well cleared if i take a zinetac along with Coekastle.
I don't want surgery unless it's last resort because my post nasal is responding to medicine. Only the throat pain is still there even after drip stops. I have taken acidity regulators in the past and it helps the throat but not permanently cured. Throat pain also gets reduced quickly by black pepper but that gives acidity in return. So looking for a permanent solution to this.

Kindly request you to advise me regarding this doctor. Thanks.

Brief Answer:
Acid reflux might be a cause for the throat pain

Detailed Answer:
Hi,thank you for posting your query on health care magic.
I can understand your concern.

You are suffering from throat pain probably due to two reasons:Acid reflux and Posterior Nasal Drip due to Allergy.
Even Acid reflux can also cause Posterior Nasal Drip.

For the Allergy problem ,

You may have an Allergy testing done,to find out which substances you are allergic to,so that you can avoid those Allergy causing Substances.
Continue using Fluticasone Nasal Spray.
If Coekastle(Montelukast) is causing Giddiness, then you may use Medicine Fexofenadine(like Allegra) for a few days(around 10 days).
Also use Saline Nasal Spray.

Take following life-style measures:
Avoid too much milk and milk products like yogurt, cottage cheese and butter, meat and fried foods, as they cause excess mucus in the throat. These items carry protein molecules called casein that increases secretions of mucus and is difficult to digest.

Make sure that you drink plenty of liquids such as water, juice or tea with honey, and gargle daily with warm salt water to thin out mucus.

Inhale steam from a tub of boiling water or hot shower to loosen mucus in the throat and sinus congestion.

Blow your nose frequently to prevent mucus from draining into your throat.

Drink hot liquids to moisten the airways and break up the mucus.

Limit exposure to irritants such as household cleaners, paint fumes, chemicals or cigarette smoke. Stop smoking as it irritates the throat and worsens respiratory conditions.

For the Acid reflux problem,
You may take following medicines:
Pantoprazole with Domperidone, and Liquid Digene for atleast 2 weeks.

Take following life-style measures for Acid reflux:

Treating obesity/overweight in you are suffering from obesity/over weight by reducing daily caloric intake and aerobic physical activity.

Changing food habits:Avoid High-fat foods and chocolate as they might reduce LES(lower esophageal sphincter) pressure or prolong gastric emptying leading to reflux.Increase fiber intake.Increase fruit and vegetable intake. Reduce spicy and sweet food intake. Reduce carbohydrate beverage intake as they can also decrease XXXXXXX pressure.Reduce acid beverage intake (orange or apple juice).Reduce alcohol and coffee.
Eat food slowly. After eating, have a minimum gap of 2-3 hours for sleeping.

Elevating the head of the bed.

After following the above lifestyle measures for Allergy and Acid reflux for atleast 1 month,if still no improvement, then you might get benefit by Sinus Surgery.

Hope this answers your question.I would be happy to answer if you have any follow-up questions.Take care.
