What Causes Severe Neck And Head Pain While Having Neck Arthritis?

Posted on Tue, 22 Dec 2015
Question: Have had neck and head pain for over two months. Had MRI of brain and neck. Brain was fine but neck full of arthritis. They want to do a steroid injection tomorrow Dec.2 but with this pain my #15 tooth hurts periodically up into sinus and also makes left ear ring and hiss very loudly. Had x-rays of tooth three times and they said it looks good. No decay or other problems I have a little fever when tooth and sinus start hurting. Could neck be causing this problem or not. Hesitant on steroid injection if tooth or sinus be problem. What should I do please?

Brief Answer:
Your neck seeems to be the source of all the problems.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

Arthrtis of the neck vertebrae can be a source of significant neck and head pain. The pain may radiate to your tooth and what you feel to be your sinus hurting could actually be due to the same neck arthritis. I am not very sure if steroid injection would be very useful but if your doctor has prescribed it, he must have felt it justified.

I leave the judgment of steroid injection to you and your treating physician. But what you must do is to consult a physical therapist and learn the right exercises that you need to practice on daily basis. Hot compress and ultrasonotherapy (administered by physical therapists) would provide relief. Neck traction might also be required.
