What Causes Severe Headache In The Night?

default
Posted on Tue, 18 Oct 2016
Question:
I often wake during the middle of the night with a headache. When I'm ready to get up it's still there. Why do I wake up with a headache? Is there anyway to avoid them? I don't drink alcohol or use tobacco and always drink plenty of fluids. I do suffer from migraines, but this feels different.

Brief Answer:
It is important to find the cause of headache.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for posting your query.

I am Dr Sudhir Kumar, Neurologist, and would try my best to help you.

I have noted your symptoms and the fact that these headaches are different from your usual migraine headaches. Finding out the cause of headache is important to start the correct treatment.

A brain scan, preferably an MRI, should be done to exclude ischemia (lack of blood supply to brain) or any mass lesions such as tumors or any other pathology.

I hope my answer helps. Please get back if you have any follow up queries or if you require any additional information.

Wishing you good health,
