Posted on Mon, 8 Jun 2015
Question: Hi I have been on birth control for about 6 years now and recently I had unprotected sex about 10 to 11 days ago. 2 days ago I was supposed to start my period and started with severe cramps following the next day with slight brownish blood today I went to the bathroom and regular bleeding then back to blood clot brownish blood only on tampons. Could I be pregnant? Or is this normal menstration? Should I take a test?

Brief Answer:
It is normal, do not worry.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for writing to us with your health concern.
IT is common while on birth control to have cramps and altered periods sometimes.
Periods can be lighter, and you can have clotting and spotting too.
So this is part of the normal spectrum.
IN my opinion, there is no need to take a test, if you wish to reassure yourself completely, you might take one.
All the best
