What Causes Restless Legs After Eating In A Patient With Diabetes?

default
Posted on Tue, 14 Feb 2017
Question: I get restless legs after I eat. I am a diabetic, so I take metformin with meals. I also take 38 units of lantus solar star insulin at bedtime. I can't sleep due to restless legs. My blood sugar reading two hours after after eating was 142. I talk walks when I get restless legs, but tonight it is not doing any good. Tonights dinner was a salad and some salmon.

What can I do?

Brief Answer:
Diabetic neuropathy is likely cause.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thanks for your question.
Noted your concern.

Your symptoms are most likely due to diabetic neuropathy though other causes should be ruled out.
In such a case I may suggest following evaluation
- Detailed physical examination including neurological evaluation & Foot examination.
- Blood investigations like
Complete Blood Count.
HbA1c
Lipid Profile
Renal Function Test
Liver Function Test
Ultra TSH
Vitamin B12
Vitamin D3

Depending upon all above appropriate diagnosis can be made.

Use of Metaformin may be associated with Vitamin B12 deficiency.

In most of the cases Vitamin B12 & D3 supplement or also specific medicines like pregabalin or duloxetin may help.

Better to consult your diabetologist for detailed evaluation.

Hope this helps you.

Dr Abhay Mali.
