What Causes Pain Under The Right Rib-cage?

default
Posted on Mon, 19 May 2014
Question: I am a 72 year old male in good health. Three days ago I experienced pain under my right rib-cage,
especially when I move but not evident when I stand still or sit.The condition has not changed since.
Prior to this occasion I had not suffered any similar pain. Could this be muscular ( I do not recall any
recent strain) or could it be liver damage?

Brief Answer:
It is muscular pain

Detailed Answer:
Hello Sir,
I have read your case history and I can assure you that it is muscular pain. If it would be a liver problem, then pain should be present at rest also. Pain which increases on movement and relieved with rest is usually muscluar pain.
Muscle pull can be due to sleeping in wrong position or sudden bending.
If you would be my patient I will offer you following :
1. Hot water fomentation , either with a wet cloth or bottle filled with warm water.
2. Diclofenac ointment local application three times daily.
3. Tablet Brufen if pain is very severe.
4.Avoid sleeping on right side.
If your pain decreases in 6 to 7 days then it is fine. If it increases then I would suggest you to get X ray of the chest, as some time there can be a rib injury also.
I hope this answer will help you. Let me know if you want to ask any other question. Thanks and take care.
