Posted on Thu, 27 Nov 2014
Question: Hi, I am XXXX , 55 yrs old with no BP/Sugar problem. I have been very active regularly into jogging/brisk walk every day, can jog about 5 kms non-stop. Of late, I have started feeling pain in my left foot in the region of big toe joint (downside) when I undertake jogging or brisk walk. If continued for few more days without taking rest, toe joint (bunion) swells. I am using high end shoes with proper insole. Is it due to difficiency in calcium or any other vitamin and need to take any medicine. I donot feel the same problem in my right foot. kindly advise.

Brief Answer:
Likely to be early osteoarthritis

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for your query.

I'm Dr. Sudhir Kumar,

After going through your query I concluded that you may be having early osteoarthritis of MP joint of big toe region as it is common in your age. It can be confirmed by x ray.Treatment of it is Diacerine ( prevent cartilage breakdown ), glucosamine( regenerate cartilage) and analgesic such as diclofenac slow release tablets for pain relief. You should wear soft sole shoes. I think for few weeks you should avoid jogging so that it became normal. It does not seem to be due to vitamin or calcium deficiency however you can get your vitamin D3 level. If it is low then it can be supplemented. You can discuss with your treating Doctor about it.

Hope I have answered your query.
If you have any further questions I will be happy to help.

Wishing you good health.
Take care.
