What Causes Pain In Ankle After Having Steroid Injection?

default
Posted on Fri, 6 Feb 2015
Question: I have spider veins which typically cause no pain. I am going to get steroid injections next week but when I woke up this morning, my left ankle was throbbing, tender to the touch and is warm and red. Is there something going on?

Brief Answer:
Soft tissues bacterial infection.

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Thank you for the query.

Have you had any injury of the ankle recently? Do you have fever? Do you take any medicines? Do you have any chronic disease? Why do you take steroids? Can you please attach a photo of this ankle (and the other one as well for comparison)

From your description most probable reason of this symptoms is bacterial infection of the soft tissues called Erysipelas. Due to Streptococcus bacteria infection, sudden redness, warmness of soft tissues appears. There is also a fever in most cases.

Veins thrombosis is the next possibility. This issue gives hard, painful and swollen limb (leg usually). Very characteristic for deep veins thrombosis is calf hardness and pain (please palpate your calf and see if it hurts). The pain gets worse when walking.

In case of bacterial infection, antibiotics treatment is necessary. Veins thrombosis should be diagnosed with Dopplers ultrasound and treated with heparine injections.

Hope this will help. Feel free to ask further questions.
Regards.
