Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

I would like to know your current therapy and your past medical history.

Ankle swelling could be a sign of increased fluid retention (heart failure, liver or renal disease), as well as other possible disorders like arthritis, chronic venous insufficiency or drug adverse effects (calcium channel blockers may lead to leg and hand swelling).

Coming to this point, I would recommend consulting with your attending physician for a careful physical exam and some tests:

- a resting ECG, a cardiac ultrasound and NT pro BNP levels for heart failure
- liver and renal function tests
- a chest X ray study
- blood electrolytes
- complete blood count, PCR, sedimentation rate for inflammation
- a Doppler ultrasound of the leg vessels.

You should discuss with your doctor on the above tests.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
