What Causes Low Systolic Readings?

default
Posted on Mon, 23 Mar 2015
Question: I take 100 mg losartan and 10 mg amlodipine daily. Diastolic readings are always in the 70 range, but my sistolic readings vary widely from mid 40's to over 80. What is the problem?

First of all thanks for choosing Healthcaremagic for posting your query.

Sorry but Systolic readings of mid 40 can't be possible . It's extremely low and patient may not survive at such Systolic pressure . I think there might have been a typing error .

Kindly mention your exact systolic readings.

Regards.

I did mis-speak ... my upper number registers as high as the 190's and otherwise from the high 140's to higher numbers, up to the 190's. My diastolic, again, generally stays in the lower 80's, but most usually in the 70's range. I want to say that about 12 months ago the doctor added the 10 mg amlodipine to bring the systolic down but that doesn't seem to be effective. I am not pleased adding a beta bloker especially with its negative reviews.

Brief Answer:
Increase Amlodipine to 15mg per day.

Detailed Answer:
HI

Thanks for the details .

For your age a systolic Blood pressure upto 150 is fine , but anything above that is high.

I need to know what are you concerns regarding a Beta Blocker since it is also a fine medication.

If you still are reluctant for Beta blocker then other alternatives are Minipress, Arkamin. Or one more alternative is to increase your Amlodipine dose to 15mg per day. But at this dosage you may get Swelling of foot.

Your Diastolic pressure is fine.

Hope this information was useful to you.
Any clarifications feel free to ask .
