What Causes Heaviness In The Stomach With Belching?

default
Posted on Tue, 18 Jul 2023
Question: I have a heavy feeling in my stomach and have been belching a lot. I do take a lot of meds...cardiac and kidney
It doesn't matter what I eat...although I try to eat fairly carefully since I obviously have problems. Fish and vegetables. I eat a lot of salads and I steam or roast the veggies.. Sometimes, I do my own version of stir fry..which is 1 teaspoon of canola oil with chicken broth.

Thank you very much. I do chew gum [that is to prevent eating], and I do like
seltzer water..although I definitely lowered my intake. I sleep with a C-PAP and am on a FOD-MAP diet. [Besides cardiac and kidney problems, I have chronic stomach ulcers, and because I have a damaged pituitary, I have some endocrine imbalances.
Yeah, everyone wonders why I am still walking around and fairly functional, but I am trying to be careful.

Thank you for your comments...

Sincerely, XXXXXXXXX

Brief Answer:

The upper gastrointestinal tract and the gallbladder have to be checked

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

Belching and upper gastrointestinal discomfort usually have benign causes like excessive air swallowing. In other cases, the stomach, duodenum or the gallbladder may be involved.

Excessive air swallowing may occur when you're eating too fast, chewing gums, consuming carbonated drinks, etc. Gastroesophageal reflux disease may also be implicated particularly with the heaviness.

An ultrasound scan of the gallbladder may exclude issues like gallbladder stones that may cause transient discomfort (colic).

Finally checking the upper gastrointestinal tract with upper gastrointestinal endoscopy may be appropriate if the symptoms persist for long.

Trying a proton pump inhibitor may help with the symptoms and indirectly reveal their nature (acidity).

Plavix may be contributing to upper gastrointestinal problems but you shouldn't try to stop it without your doctor's approval.

Regarding your diet, you can try to avoid food that causes air swallowing (candies, gums, beverages mostly) and also avoid food with high-fat content.

Alcohol, coffee, chocolates, citrus fruits, and a bloated stomach may worsen reflux. Prefer to eat more frequent meals but with less quantity of food.

Hope I have answered your query.

Take care
