What Causes Headache, Vomiting And Unequal Pupils In A 5 Year Old Child?

default
Posted on Thu, 25 Feb 2016
Question: My granddaughter (5), has experienced some headaches, nausea, vomiting, unequal pupils in the last few days. Her eyes dilate properly in dim light, but do not constrict evenly in bright light....one stays dilated when unnecessary. Her Doctor has ordered an EEG to rule out abnormal brain activity. By the way, she flunked her vision test today. I am scared to death.

Brief Answer:
Neurological examination/MRI Brain/Ophthalmologist's opinion.

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,
Thanks for being on healthcaremagic.com.
I am Dr.Ajay Panwar,a neurologist,here to answer your query.

I understand your concerns well and will offer my best possible help.Headache, vomiting and unequal pupils, in combination are indicative of a possible intracranial pathology. Raised intracranial pressure is probable. Papilledema should be ruled out with funduscopic examination.

Further, neurological examination may give definite diagnostic clues and MRI Brain appears to be warranted .I would have liked to help you towards the diagnosis but diagnosing this just on the basis of history is not possible. I suggest you to please visit a Neurologist, urgently.

If you have any further questions,I shall be glad to have you in follow-up.

Regards
Dr.Ajay Panwar,
MD,DM(Neurology)
