What Causes Greenish Appearance Of The Inner Side Of Forearms?

default
Posted on Wed, 3 Sep 2014
Question: My daughter (7 years old) was hanging "monkey style" from a golf cart. After a while I noticed that both her inner arms were green-ish (at the area where they take blood from). At the beginning I thought she rubbed them with a metal surface that stained them but then I realized that it was her veins.

She didn't have any pain and after like half an hour it went away but I'm worried about what could cause that.

Brief Answer:
Normal hue of deoxygenated blood.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Welcome and thanks for posting your query to the forum.

I can understand your concern for the greenish appearance of the inner side of forearms of your daughter.

It is always really bothersome to find anything unusual in our kids and therefore do understand your apprehension.

Let me first reassure you that the condition in your daughter is quite usual phenomenon which we see in our day to day practice.

To tell you simply- the skin in children is quite thin as compared to adults and therefore the veins are quite easily visible if anything is occludding the skin surface.

Due to the monkey style of hanging of your daughter it caused temporary cessation of blood over the area. This blood is deoxygenated blood which can be visible in different hues and colors varying from bluish to greenish to purplish.

As soon as the normal blood supply is regained the deoxygenated blood is displaced by normal blood and therefore regain of normal skin tone.

If it is done for longer period of time then can cause local bruising.

So i reassure you fully that the phenomenon was quite normal and natural without any abnormality.

Do take care that it should either not to be done or if done then carefully for very short period of time.

I hope these informations will relax your mind. I will be glad to answer any further queries.
