default
Posted on Thu, 3 Aug 2017
Question: I have had a fever for about 48 hrs that has been fluctuating between 100 in the morning an 102 during the day--I have been taking advil and have no other symptoms. I just checked now an it was up to 103.6. (it was 5 hrs since I last took advil) I live in an area with quite a deer ticks, so although I'm not aware of a tick bite, it's possible.

Brief Answer:
you should be examined by a doctor

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

If you don't have any other symptoms (like cough, headache, sore throat, flank pain, urinary tract symptoms, etc) then the most likely cause is a viral infection. Despite that, a fever as high as yours may be associated with serious infections sometimes. So a visit to your doctor sounds appropriate. Pyelonephritis, meningitis, pneumonia and other infections may be causing it. Your doctor can elicit signs of various infections during clinical examination. If necessary some further tests may be ordered. For example a urinary tract infection requires a urinalysis for confirmation.

I can't comment on the ticks but Lyme disease usually presents with a characteristic skin lesion; a circular redness that transforms into a red circle with gradually increasing radius and normal skin in the center.

If you've been bitten by a tick then tick-borne diseases can be considered. If you haven't found any ticks on your skin then a bite does not sound likely.

I hope you find my comments helpful! Let me know if I could assist you further.
Kind regards!
