Posted on Mon, 22 Dec 2014
Question: Is it possible to have a false positive test result for giardia growing in my stool if i am asymtematic? I tested positive last monday, and tested negative on thursday. What is the appropriate course of action? I ask because the whole reason i was tested at all in the first place is because my girlfriend keeps getting reinfected.

Brief Answer:
Likely Asymptomatic infection, both partner treated

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
I understand your concern.
I am Dr. Arun Tank, infectious diseases specialist, answering your query.

It can be possible to have asymptomatic Giardia infection. It means though you have Giardia , you are asymptomatic and you show positive results.

It is also true that you can transfer infections to your girl friend when having asymptomatic infection.

Giardia infection can be self limiting so one time you tested positive and after a few days it becomes negative.

Though you are negative for the Giardia right now I suggest you should take a small course of metronidazole drugs to clear up the residual silent infection. Both of the partner should take the treatment and that is also under your Doctors guidance. That way reinfection never happens.

I will be happy to answer your further concern, you can ask me on bit.ly/DrArun.
Thank you.
