What Causes Extreme Pain And Intense Burning Sensation Between Shoulder Blades?

default
Posted on Mon, 28 Dec 2015
Question: I have been having extreme pain and intense burning in spine area between shoulder blades. Pain also in shoulder to where I could not lay on right side due to it. Now getting tingling in last three fingers up past elbow. PA thought it was just muscle spasms at first and prescribed Valium. It did help extreme burning. Tingling is getting worse. Finally got xray and this is finding: Rather prominent space narrowing C5-6 and C6-7 with associated moderate anterior osteophytes. Cervical vertebral heights and disk space otherwise well maintained. No fracture or focus of bone destruction. CONCLUSION: Degenerative changes with prominent disk space narrowing C5-6 C6-7. What does future treatment look like. I would assume a MRI would be more specific? The pain and tingling are miserable.

Brief Answer:
Slip disc likely. Needs an MRI to decide the course of treatment

Detailed Answer:
Hi there.

Thanks for the query.

Do you have radiating or shooting pain from the back of the neck to the arm and fingers?

Do you have Diabetes ?

Yes, You seem to be having slip disc or compression of the nerves from the back of the neck to the arm.

This can cause tingling, numbness. If you have Diabetes, then the burning sensation may be attributed to that.

I advise you to wear a cervical collar, avoid bending the neck forward or lifting any weights. Apply hot packs to the back of the neck twice a day. Take pain killers and muscle relaxant low Tablet Diclofenac and Thicolchicoside combination twice a day for 5 days after meals. Keep well hydrated.

You need an MRI to find the exact level of nerve compression and to assess the severity of the compression, which will help to decide the further course of treatment which can include physiotherapy to surgery.

I hope I have answered your query.

Thank you very much. I am hoping I get an MRI scheduled soon. I do not have diabetes. The burning pain is located right in the area of the spine that the narrowing has occurred. The tingling in my fingers is getting worse. It goes up past elbow. Shoulder pain too. I have only been given Valium 5mg twice daily. When I bend forward the tingling gets so much worse and is in entire right arm.

Brief Answer:
Don't take Valium. Take the following medications and do get an MRI

Detailed Answer:
Please do not take Valium. You can take Tablet Diclofenac and Thicolchicoside combination twice a day for 5 days. Also take Tablet Pregabalin and Methylcobalamine combination tablet one at night after meals for a month. This should help with the muscles spasms and tingling and burning sensation respectively.

I will look up generic nsmes of this medications. She said Valium would help eith muscle spasms and sleep. It has taken edge off but as I said tingling is getting worse. I'm hoping to hear something today from office on scheduling an MRI. Is this X-ray result urgent or is it a situation that wouldn't prompt immediate contact.
