What Causes Enlargement Of Neck Lymph Nodes With Sinus Infection?

default
Posted on Wed, 28 May 2014
Question: 3 months ago my 4 year old grandson was diagnosed with a cyst in the ducts in the gallbladder. He had numerous blood tests which were fine but showed elevated liver enzymes, an MRI, and an ultra sound. He went through an 8 hour surgery which was successful and he recovered completely. However patches of his hair came out. A blood test was taken and it was determined that he had alopecia caused by all the stress. His ANA was elevated and he was seen by a pediatric arthritis doctor to rule out arthritis and thyroid problems. The doctor said his blood was excellent and he was eating, playing, and sleeping fine. The doctor agreed that he was fine. Then he got a sinus infection, saw doctor, had blood taken which was fine. Put on antibiotic. Question is he has a small enlarged lymph node on back of neck and a minor cough. Could this be serious even though all his blood work for last 3 months has been excellent?

Brief Answer:
Most likely due to seboorhoeic deratitis of scalp

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Welcome to healthcare-Magic
Greetings of the day

First and foremost let me reassure you there is no cause for concern.
Children do sometimes have enlargement of neck lymph nodes and it is especially associated with respiratory tract infection.
Lymph nodes over the back of neck(occipital region) are sometimes associated with subclinical infection in scalp like Seborrhoiec Dermatitis(Dandruff). Dermatitis may be visible or not. If the nodes are less than 2 cm in size, firm , freely mobile and there are no other lymph node enlargement then there seems to be cause for concern.

I would suggest once a week local application of anti-dandruff shampoo on the scalp, it will cause regression nodes.

Do get back to me if you need any further assisstance, will be glad to assist you.

Take CAre
