What Causes Discomfort In Upper Back Tooth?

default
Posted on Tue, 9 Sep 2014
Question: I think i may have a cracked tooth. nothing visible. i had a root removed a few weeks ago successfully, but have discomfort in upper back tooth. I mentioned this to the dentist, who advised rubbing sensodyne around . It was excruciating. The original filling was removed, no decay evident. Feeling the tooth the next day, I experienced a horrid nerve pain. I am due to fly in a few weeks and am very concerned. Is it o.k to fly with a cracked tooth? There is nothing visible and it's not unusually sensitive to hot or cold, but the 'sweetnes' of the toothpaste was extremely unpleasant, and then that funny nerve pain. It was a big filling my dentist had to remove, or am I clutching at straws? My dentist is very thorough and a personal friend, but before I see her again, I would appreciate your advice

Brief Answer:
fractured tooth, pulpitis, RCT

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your query, I have gone through your query.
As far as the pain in the tooth is concerned, I have two possibilities.
The first cause, it can be because of the crack or fracture in the tooth.
The second cause, it can be because of the tooth infection due to secondary decay below the previous restoration.
The pain on exposure to sweet is because of the production of the acid by the bacteria, which irritates the pulp causing pain(pulpitis).
To confirm these two conditions you need to get a radiograph done which clearly shows the depth of or any fracture or crack in the tooth.
If the tooth is decayed and involving pulp, then it has to be restored with RCT (Root Canal Treatment).
If the crack or fracture is involving the pulp(cracked tooth syndrome) , it has to be root canal treated. If it is extending till the root, then it has to be removed.
It is very difficult to give a confirmative diagnosis based on the history, If possible mail me the radiographic image, after seeing the radiograph , I can give the exact diagnosis and treatment plan.
I hope my answer will help you, Take care.
