Brief Answer:

Granuloma commonly - sinus or fistula rarely.

Detailed Answer:

Hi.

Thanks for your query, albeit short and specific.

Noted the history about your 20 year old son and understood the concerns.

The commonest causes of discharge from belly button are as follows:

1. Umbilical granuloma wherein there is a small mass in the depth of umbilicus that gets infected and gives discharge.

Proper cleaning with Hydrogen peroxide and liquid Povidone iodine regularly heals this many a times. But if the granuloma is large it may need a small surgical excision.

2. Umbilical sinus or fistula needs to be checked for by a General Surgeon preferably, investigated for and treated accordingly.

Hence I would advise you the following in such a case:
1. Cleaning as advised.
2. An opinion of a General Surgeon for a proper evaluation, investigations if needed and management accordingly.

I hope this answer helps you.
