Posted on Fri, 10 Jun 2016
Question: Ny daughter is on a school trip and they took a bus and drove 8 hours to XXXXXXX She gets car sick/ motion sickness. So at 5pm yesterday she took one dramamine in the pill form. She fell asleep for a few and upon waking up her friend noticed her pupils. This was at 7:45pm. I am uploading a picture collage of the changes in her pupils since 7:45 last night to 9:15 this morning. One pupil is fully dilated and will not change. The other one has been changing. What can cause this. I do understand that the active ingredient in dramamine is the same eye docs use ti dialte pupils during exam. But the one pupil is still the same since yesterday. No head trauma. No headaches. No blurred vision. She says she feels fine

Brief Answer:
Drug induced mydriasis

Detailed Answer:
My dear,
Thanks for sending your query to us.

It was good of you to send sequential photographs. As you can see the 9.15 morning photograph shows that the effect is waning off. Usually complaints of blurring for near is a prominent complaint but this can always be absent in children due to higher power reserve.

Do not worry. The effect washes off from body in 24 to 36 hours. No treatment is needed in such asymptomatic case.

Any further query please do get back to me.
