What Causes Difficulty In Breathing In Cold Temperatures?

default
Posted on Mon, 9 Feb 2015
Question: Hello Doctor,
My wife start getting breathing problem whenever weather temperature drops below 20C. This aggravates as day ends and during night. She finds it extremely difficult to sleep. She consulted local physician and he had prescribed some antibiotic and Lucast tablet. But it did not help much. Previous years too she had similar problem, but not as much as this year. Most of the time when she felt difficulty in breathing, she used to take Brozeet syrup and that used to help her relive. But now that is not helping her and now she take a tea spoon of brandy with twice that proportion of water and this is helping her to relive. Now I am worried if she needs special checkups or which specialized doctor need to be consulted.
Thank you.

Brief Answer:
Better to consult pulmonologist.

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear,

Thanks for your question on HCM. I can understand your situation and problem.

By your history and description, I think your wife is suffering from obstructive airway disease, mostly Asthma. Asthma aggravates in cold climate and worsens if proper treatment is not started early. Your wife is also allergic to dust.

So, I think she should consult pulmonologist and get done
1. Chest x ray
2. PFT (pulmonary function test).
Chest x ray is needed to rule out infection.
PFT is needed to diagnose Asthma or other Obstructive lung diseases. PFT will also tell you about severity of the disease.

And treatment is very much based on severity. So better to consult pulmonologist and first diagnose her, then start treatment.

She may need inhaled bronchodilators, Antihistamine drugs.

Hope I have solved your query. I will be happy to help you further.
Wishing good health to your wife.
Thanks.
