What Causes Difficulty In Breathing Along With Wheezing?

Question: Last July my husband had surgery to repair 2 hernias. A plastic surgeon had to operate first and remove scar tissue from 3 previous abdominal surgeries. Then the other surgeon inserted and attached the mesh for the hernias. He had a lot of drainage after the surgery and had drains for about 6 weeks or more. Since this surgery he has really had a build up of fluid in his legs and at times his arms. His breathing has become more difficult with wheezing and shortness of breathe from very little physical activity. He has no energy and doesn't sleep well and has to sleep in the recliner in order to breath. He sleeps half of the time he is at home. Could it be possible the mesh is stretched too tightly and restricted his breathing? The doctor said it was the largest mesh they make. Could the fluid problems be coming from the breathing problems?

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Welcome on HCM!

I passed carefully through your husband's medical history and would explain that the limiting elasticity offered by the mesh could be one side of the problem.

It may really aggravate respiratory failure and even venous blood drainage. But, some potentially pre-existing disorders should be investigated as well.

In this regard it is necessary to explore the pulmonary and cardiac function; also the overall liver and kidney functions should be sought. Acute inflammatory disorders during around the surgery period may be possible contributors.

Coming to this point several medical tests are recommended:

- resting ECG,
- cardiac ultrasound,
- chest X ray and pulmonary function tests,
- complete blood count,
- PCR & ESR,
- liver and renal function tests,
- blood electrolytes level

You need to discuss with his attending doctor on the above mentioned issues.

Hope to have been helpful to you!
