What Causes Constant Nose Bleeds After Sinus Surgery?

default
Posted on Tue, 13 Oct 2015
Question: I just had sinus surgery and my nose bleeds like it doesn"t want to slow down or stop. How long does it normally take for the blood to clot and stop the bleeding and until, what can I use to help slow down the bleeding from the surgery?

Thank you

Follow-up question: I also had a tube down my throat during the surgery and my throat's a little sore right now, how long does it normally take for my throat to start feeling better? What can I take to help soothe my throat?

Brief Answer:
Depends upon the extent of surgery and intra-op findings.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for your query.

1. If bleeding is a problem after sinus surgery, a nasal pack for 48 hours usually settles it. Newer packing materials such as Nasopore and hemostatic packs such as Surgiflo do not need removal and can be cleaned with saline nasal washes a week later.

2. There is some blood stained nasal discharge off and on in the first 4-6 weeks. Inform your doctors and let them decide.

3. Did you have a nasal pack initially in the immediate post-op period? What was the extent of the surgery? Upload nay operative notes that you may have.

4. The sore throat due to the intubation during general anaesthesia is very common and settles down without treatment in a few days.

5. You can take an anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic medication, medicated gargles and Mucaine Gel to soothe the throat.

I hope that I have answered your query. If you have any more questions I will be available to answer them.

Regards.
