Question: Hi doctor, I am 40 years old male and in the winter when coughing stop breathing suddenly, that time I felt like my throat got stick. After few minutes I was able to breath. I went to the doctor and he said that it was due to allergy only. Now after 1 month I feel breathing difficulty while sitting or if breathing through mouth. I went to the doctor and he prescribed mi antibiotic but no relief. Second time doctor prescribe me Montek LC (1 tab in night) it gave me relief but day time still I feel pain on throat and some time breathing difficulty also. Kindly advise.

Brief Answer: Montek, allergies and Reactive Airway disease Detailed Answer: Hello XXXXXXX My name is Vinay. Thanks for coming to HealthCareMagic. Let me see if I can put you in the right track to handling this issue. The fact that the Montek worked so well while the antibiotics did not shows that this is not an infection. This is a problem where your immune system is over-reacting to an outside stimulus.. possibly to cold air, possibly something in the air. This is commonly seen in allergies, asthma and in some cases where the two do not fit, but the symptoms are still similar, we called the problem a 'Reactive Airway Disease' Don't fret, these things are manageable. The ideal solution is to go to a good Pulmonologist (Lung doctor) and have them listen to your chest, after which an x-ray should be done to make sure there is no lingering infection or other pathology. After which the doctor would prescribe medications in the same class as Montek (called Leukotriene inhibitors), antihistamines and in some cases the doctor might advise you to buy a small home nebulization machine and do nebulizations multiple times a day till the coughing is controlled. Which course of action depends on what they see when they examine you and their own experiences, so it is somewhat of a dealers choice. I do not recommend that you start on antihistamines OR nebulizations without seeing a doctor, getting examined and getting that x-ray. We must make sure there is no other pathology that could be hidden by the medications that are being given. I hope this helps. Feel free to follow-up whenever you like.
