What Causes A Painful Reddish Purple Spot On The Back?

default
Posted on Wed, 28 Jun 2017
Question: Hi, on Saturday night I was laying in bed and felt something on my back and began to pick at it thinking it was a zit. Sunday afternoon I went to the beach and noticed the area I was picking may have been a mole and it is now raised and very dark and the skin around it is red. It is sore to the touch. I was wondering if it could be anything serious to worry about. I have an appointment Thursday to get it checked out.

Information.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome,

I might be able to provide some information on it if you can send some good quality close up pictures of it. To do this, use the "upload reports" button.

Also, if possible, give me an idea on the approximate size such as if it is the size of a pencil eraser, or some other comparison.

Thanks.

Hello XXXXXXX

It looks like there was some bleeding into the tissues and that's why it now looks darker and more raised than it did before.

I'm actually more concerned about the base of the skin that is red right now. It's hard to tell if that skin just has some bruising or if the skin is infected. If your appointment is Thursday, watch the area of skin that is red (you can even draw lightly with pen at the edges of it, and monitor that it doesn't expand further. I think it (the reddish-purple skin at the base) is a bruise rather than an infection (which is usually bright red and hot).

I'm thinking the "mole" may be a cherry angioma. These are benign raised abnormalities of blood vessels, that are like moles, but red, and they can bleed if picked. They can be treated by dermatologists with cautery or laser.

I recommend you keep your appointment on Thursday, but other than monitoring the reddish skin at the base, I wouldn't worry about it as being anything that is an emergency. I realize the area looks disturbing right now, but I think that is just because it was picked and bled partly underneath.
