Brief Answer:
It has to be drained.

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Collection of pus in the finger has to be drained.
Cysts like sebaceous cyst can be infected. They occur in areas of hair.It can occur over the back of a finger.
Simple infection of finger with collection of pus is common .It could be a simple abscess in your case which has to be drained.
You should keep your hand clean and dry.Injury to the fingers has to be avoided.
Please consult your doctor and get the pus drained.
Hope I answered your query.
Wish you good health.

I have had this cyst for several months. It has drained itself three times when I would hit my finger against something accidently. Then it scabs over, fills with puss again after a week or two. Then in everyday activities it gets busted again. It seems to be a cycle that doesn't stop and it is making grooves in my nail.

Brief Answer:
I prefer to remove the cyst completely.

Detailed Answer:
Hi
If a cyst is infected and the pus is drained, the contents will come out .But,the cyst wall will remain which causes recurrence.
So,once the infection has subsided,I prefer to remove the entire cyst along with its wall.
It doesn't affect the nail.
Nail will grow normally even it is removed along with Cyst wall.
Nothing to worry.

How can I know if the cyst is infected and when the infection has subsided? It always has a red area around it, then the pusy area inside that, and the scab in the middle. It is not very painful...more like tender until, that is, I hit it on something.
I've seen two doctors and this is the most information I have received so far. Thanks!!!

Brief Answer:
You better go for excision of the whole swelling.

Detailed Answer:
Hi
There will be no pus or redness once the infection is subsided.
Even though there is persistent redness, the swelling can be excised completely.
Please consult a General surgeon and proceed further.
