What Casues Myoclonic Jerks In Arm?

default
Posted on Tue, 18 Nov 2014
Question: I have had myoclonic jerks in my right arm for two years and recently they have progressed from jerking to getting stuck....my arm gets stuck in a position...almost like a person who has cerebral palsy...its in a spastic state and it's stuck for long periods of time. I can move it at the elbow joint but the wrist and hand is stuck and I cannot move it...open it or twist the wrist joint. It starts in my legs...specifically my right leg and somewhat in my left leg, but I can work threw the leg spasms after 10 minutes and then my arm gets stuck. MRI is fine and EEG is fine.

Hello there.Welcome to healthcaremagic.
I am Dr.Senduran,General physician hope to answer your query.

Gone through the history carefully.

In my opinion, you could have started to manifest the progression of myoclonus-dystonia syndrome.i.e specific muscle groups experience spastic tonicity as you feel in hand, wrist region, legs eyc. This may run in families or also gets inherited sporadically. There are many subtypes, classified on the basis of level of disinhibition of impulses from higher control centers to periphery. Most common being the cortical variant.Normal MRI And normal EEG may rule out this variant.

But Further physical exam and investigations like EMG to study the electro physiology of affected muscle group, lumbar puncture(if any suspected infection, autoimmune pathology etc to find out the underlying cause.Main stay of treatment is removal of underlying cause. If there are no detectable causes, only symptomatic control is warranted.Research have been showing improvement can happen in some individuals with mild alcohol consumption.Drugs belonging to benzodiazepine class like clonazepam, antiepileptics like valproate, lamotrigine are also used in combination to effectively control the symptoms.

Your treating doctor/neurologist would be well aware of this.Discuss with, get evaluated and treatment accordingly.Hope this answers your query. If any questions, don't hesitate to ask.Take care.Wish you good health.
