Question: Is this a sever migrane, ice pick headache, or neck tension?
Is this a sever migraine, ice pick headache, or neck tension? My doctor diagnosed me with tension headache, when I told her I was have sharp pains on the right top side of my head and back on and off. She gave me some meds. for it and it has tremendously helped. But I noticed when I'm positioning my neck up, the pains come and go even more and sometimes there are on other parts of my head. The back of my head is sore, but I have thick hair and parting the section helped it go down some. Should I see a chiropractor to get this fixed or continue the meds. I've had this for almost a week now. I have no other symptoms just this..

Brief Answer:
Primary headache, Ice Pick type

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Welcome and thanks for your query.
You have a primary headache. The name depends on the nature of the pain. Migraine is a throbbing headache like your pulse beat or heart beat in the head. Tension headache is like a a band like pain around the head. Ice Pick headache is a sharp stabbing pain. From your description, it is more likely to be ice pick headache.
Do you have a high blood pressure? What medicine are you on?
Certain medicines used for blood pressure also help to prevent Primary headache.
I am sorry Chiropractors are not licensed as medical professionals in my area of practice and I have no idea as to what conditions they are allowed to treat.
If you let me know the names of medicines you are on, I shall give my opinion on how useful they are.
Wish you a good day and good health.

Butal-acet-caff I only take it when needed. My blood pressure was very high that day and she said it was due to stress.

Medicine may be used to prevent the headache.

Butalbital-Acetaminophen-Caffeine is a pain killer which you take only when needed.
Your medical history said you were on blood pressure medicine. Please let me know. Any painful condition can raise the blood pressure. So you should have your blood pressure checked at a time when you do not have any headache or pain.
If you require to be on a blood pressure medicine, I can suggest you medicine which will also be helpful in preventing your headaches.
Please let me know.

Detailed Answer:
If you do not have asthma and your blood pressure and heart rate are in the normal range, you may try a medicine I give to my patients for prevention of headache. It is propranolol which is a beta blocker. The dose I start with is only 10 mg twice a day. It is a very small dose and will not drop the blood pressure significantly. It decreases the sympathetic nervous system ( responsible for the fight or flight response) over activity which is implicated in the development of such headaches. It decreases anxiety and causes less physical symptoms like palpitation, trembling etc in response to stress. This is the simplest preventive medication and works in the majority of my patients with similar headaches.
I only prescribe other medicines to prevent headaches, if this does not work.
Best wishes
